I keep thinking I should give this up, but people keep encouraging me to continue so I will ... for the moment.
This week's challenge was given to me by Brian Caplen, Editor-in-Chief of The Banker magazine, a sister publication of The Financial Times and hugely serious and circumspect.
Therefore, I was surprised when Brian said I must sing Summertime. I immediately thought of Mungo Jerry but he went Ella Fitzgerald and sent me his lyrics. Due to time and focus, I edited his lyrics to my own version so here it is.
Summertime and the living isn't easy ...
Summertime from Chris Skinner on Vimeo.
Summertime
And the markets are complex
Stocks are slumping
And the index is low
Your bank is rich
And your bank balance is ugly
But hush little user
Don’t you cry
For there’s an app
That will make you happy
It’s an app made just for you
It’s from a challenger
Focused on customer journeys
So hush little user don’t you cry
One of these mornings
Technology has changed it all
Banks buy the startups
And kiss the founders goodbye
There are now no platforms
That can harm you
So hush big banker don’t you cry
And just to pay full service to Brian, here's his version:
Summertime
and the bankin’s not easy
Big tech’s a-jumpin
and the stocks are high
Oh your app has a glitch
It’s really not workin
hush little banker
Don’t you cry
One of these mornings
Your tech will rise up singing
You can close your branch
Your app will fly
But till that morning
There’s a mainframe can harm you
With Apple and Facebook standin by
Summertime
and the fintech is easy
Funding is jumpin
They all can retire
Oh the app was a cinch
It’s really good lookin
So hush little crowdfund
Don’t you cry
One of these mornings
Both clients will be singin
Then you’ll sell to a bank
Kiss the beanbags goodbye
There’s no platform can harm you
Even with Apple and Facebook standin by
