World Cup Day at last

After four years of anticipation, the football (or soccer) World Cup starts today in South Africa.

As a result, there will be random quotes and notes thrown into the blog relating to football rather than banking.  Many are humourous and come from the excellent book: "tell him he's Pele".

Here's a few of my favourites so far:

Rio Ferdinand: “Gary Neville was captain and now Ryan Giggs has taken on that mantelpiece.”

Michael Owen in a TV interview: “I’ve worked my nuts off to get back from injury.”
Reporter: “And how are you feeling now.”
Michael Owen: “My groin’s a bit sore.”

Phil Neville: “I’ve never been so certain about anything in my life. I want to be a coach. Or a manager. I’m not sure which.”

Chris Marsh: “We had an American player on trial with us so long we christened him OJ.”

Tommy Lawton: “Stan Matthews used to put the ball on my centre parting. They don’t do that anymore.”

Andy Goram: “Roy Aitken told Mo Johnston to spit at Glenn Hysen’s feet in the tunnel. Mo said he’d probably trap it and play it up the park.”

Ron Harris on Tommy Docherty (the Doc): “The Doc used to tell me: ‘be sure to get your late tackles in early’.”

Danny Blanchflower: “It’s our new tactic. We equalise before the others have scored.”

Paul Gascoigne: “I don’t make predictions ... and I never will.”

And last, but not least, Eric Cantona: “When the seagulls follow the trawler, it’s because they think sardines will be thrown into the sea.”
