I haven't said much about the World Cup on the Blog, as it's not really about banking, but well done to Spain and hard luck to the Netherlands or, as they are now nicknamed, the Studs.
Anyways, I was intrigued to see this list of numbers and, just because I like numbers, thought they could go on the blog too:
- a £500,000 has been paid as a bonus to each Spanish player for winning the World Cup
- £20.5 million has been paid to the Spanish by FIFA for winning the World Cup
- £5.9 million is paid by FIFA to each losing team who made it through to the second round, such as England
As you can see, they should have been in investment banking as it's far better paid and most
Goldman Sachs high flyers make these numbers every day. A few more numbers:
- the average age of a player was 27 years and four months (physically,
about five mentally) - Soccer City stadium can accommodate 84,490 fans
- 3.2 million fans attended the 64 games, the highest since 1994, with over a million foreign fans
- 700 million people from 215 countries watched the final
- 93 million people have watched Shakira's Waku Waku World Cup anthem on YouTube
We live in a big planet and football is truly global.
Meanwhile, my favourite quote of the commentators has to be this one from Ray Wilkins: "Uruguay is a country of three million people and half of them are probably women".
