Regulate for what’s needed, not politics

Just went to another great plenary session discussing whether transaction banking will be the engine for the next phase of sustainable growth and moderated by Karen Cone of TowerGroup. The panel consisted of the heads of global transaction banking from some of the largest banks: Werner Steinmuller of Deutsche Bank Andrew Long from HSBC Catherine…

Awake and asleep

Tuesday felt like seven days in one and so it is no wonder that I find myself awake when I should be asleep and asleep when I should be awake … or is that just the time zone or the drink, one asks? So now it's Wednesday and day three of SIBOS.  A few more…

Can we get Asians to spend rather than save?

Not surprisingly I’ve now turned in from the conference for the day absolutely knackerood. After the 10k marathon of going up and down from ground to third floor and back all day, between the two exhibit halls, conference rooms, plenary and breakout sessions, toilets and you name it, me feet are falling off. Not that…

Interesting research

SIBOS and most conferences are always a good moment to release research. We released ours last week, but there are several reports that stand out. For example, Barclays Commercial Banking polled 160 people across financial institutions in London, Dubai, Frankfurt and Singapore, to find out what they looked for in their selection of a transaction…

Get out of credit cards quick

Back in the HKCEC (Hong Kong Conference and Exhibition Centre) and it’s walk, walk, walk. I reckon I've already walked 12 kilmotres since arriving yesterday and probably will average 10k per day. This is because the HKCEC is HUGE. Three floors of exhibition space and, wall-to-wall, about a kilometre between entry and exit. No wonder…

Argh, the typhoon got me …

I think SIBOS is jinxed. In 2001, 9/11 happened just as we all planned to go to Singapore and the show was cancelled. In 2008, Lehman Brothers collapsed the day the show started and so we spent the week trying to get over it (what's new, some said). In 2009, the hand of God intervenes…

Banking on the banking system, one year later

So, after chairing the securities infrastructure panel it was off for the first innotribe session of the week. Innotribe is all about visions of the next generation of banking and is specifically debating the role of cloud computing, mashups and crowdsourcing. My session is leading the crowdsourcing debate and we’ve already come up with something…
